Summer Activities 2014
Believe it or not, Cub Scouting is actually a year-round activity! While we have regular Den Meetings and Pack Meetings from September through May, this doesn’t mean that we stop having fun over the summer! The pack hike program will continue throughout the summer and in addition to that, there is a special award that boys can earn if they participate in a pack activity each month, and that’s the Summertime Activity Award!
For 2014, here are the activities that we’re planning as a pack. (More details will be available as the dates get closer. Check your emails!)
Sat June 21st – Sun Jun 22nd … Beaver Day
A scout is “helpful”. We are going to help the Rangers at Treasure Valley with whatever needs doing ( we won’t know until we show up what tasks they will have for us ). It could be setting up tents and cots, clearing brush or spreading mulch. The Rangers will provide us with lunch for our hard work and we will get to use one of the Boy Scout campsites to overnight in. Last year we went fishing and swimming in Browning Pond, lit a hearty campfire and had a short night hike to find the “Spirit of Treasure Valley”
What could be more fun than an afternoon launching rockets ! Each participating boy will be handed a rocket kit ( there may be a small charge ) to build before the event. We will head to the launch site, picnic and see who the budding astronauts are.
Sunday July 13th … Pack Bike Ride
This will be our 4th annual bike rally. We will meet up on a section of the scenic Blackstone River Bikeway and ride about 6 miles. (The boys that participate will be credited with 2 miles towards their hiking totals)
Breezy Picnic Grounds Waterslides … July TBD
The waterslides at Breezy Picnic Grounds located in Douglas are a GREAT afternoon out. Can’t beat cool water to take the edge of the Summer heat.
Mount Monadnock … August 16th
“A scout is Brave” … This is not your average hike – we will hike a 7 mile loop taking in the “cliff walk” and the summit of Grand Monadnock. Expect the hike to take around 5-6 hours so we will need to bring plenty of water and some snacks. The view from the top is outstanding – and unlike some mountains I could mention there is NO train to the top … the only way to the summit is to hike. ( We may have to be selective about the boys and parents we allow on this – it will be strenuous … but the majority of cubs and adults in the pack should do just fine )
Battleship Cove … August 23rd – August 24th
Ever slept on a real battleship ? We will have all afternoon to explore a battleship, submarine and a russian torpedo boat. The evening is packed with events … and we get to sleep onboard the USS Massachusetts. The cost for this will be $45 for scouts and $55 for parents and siblings. You can sign up online here. Sign up and payment is required by May 23rd. Checks can be mailed or dropped off to Ms Bonetti . Please write checks to “Pack 106”
